Flying Redhead Pair

Mike Borrett (b. 1960)

Madison, WI, 2003

16.5" long

20" wing tip to wing tip

Exceptionally sculpted life-size full body fliers. This pair is hand carved with an incredible amount of surface detail across the applied wings imparted through a chip carved process with the flight feathers being relief carved out in a step down pattern. The bodies are formed to create the surface pocketing seen as the bird is in flight. Not to miss any details the bills are intricately carved and the root style legs and feet are carved and finished in a folk realistic style then inserted into the body.

Unlike many of Borretts fliers, this pair was carved and tapped in a way so that they genuinely appear to be in motion in flight instead of simply tapped in the middle of the back. The pair required that additional level of craftsmanship to be able to create a sculpture that guinely looks like it's cupping in over the water, while physically hanging in a natural manner to match it's form.

Both are signed and dated by the maker on the top of one flight feather.

Condition: Near mint - barely visible tight age check on topside wing on both the drake and hen. smaller check line on hens bottom wing.
