Herring Gull Confidence Decoy

Cameron T. McIntyre (b. 1968)

New Church, VA, c. 1991

19"

Solid bodied Herring Gull confidence decoy carved as a Christmas present in 1991, making this a rather early carving for Cameron.  The decoy is carved in a slight forward swimming position.  The head is very slightly turned to the left with glass eyes sitting in carved out eye grooves on either side of the head.  The bill carved details are particularly deep where the bill meets the face and the upper and lower beak meet.

“The number one thing I’m interested in is the sculptural form,” he says. “People are starting to appreciate that simple, more primitive things have artistic merit. What I’m doing has a certain quality, but it’s not about level of detail. I could make a super realistic decoy if I wanted to—and I don’t want to. I do it this way because that’s what I love.”
