“The sculpture began with a trip to Little Cumberland Island, Georgia, to observe loggerhead hatchlings. When they are ready to exit their sandy nest, the crater undulates at a slow ‘boil’ until all at once—almost as if nature whispered ‘Run!’—the nest explodes to life like a turtle volcano. The hatchlings, with incredible energy, flippers flailing like so many revved-up mechanical toys, begin racing to the sea.” - Andre Harvey

André Harvey (1941 - 2018) was an American sculptor whose realistic and contemporary works are primarily cast in bronze using the lost wax method.  Harvey′s first high-profile exposure was the exhibition of five sculptures for the five windows at Tiffany & Company, New York. Since that time, in a career spanning over four decades, Harvey produced an extensive volume of work which was purchased by numerous public and private collections, and featured in exhibitions both nationally and internationally.

He was a Fellow and Board Member of the National Sculpture Society, New York. The National Sculpture Society was founded in New York City in 1893 by a group of America’s most prominent sculptors, such as Daniel Chester French and Augustus St. Gaudens. It’s members have created much of this country’s public sculpture, coins, and medals. It is the oldest organization of professional sculptors in the United States. Harvey received the National Sculpture Society’s Joel Meissner Award, the Tallix Foundry Award, and the Edith H. and Richman Proskauer Prize for “Non-Traditional Sculpture”.  Over the course of Harvey's distinguished career, he was part of over twenty selected exhibitions with his work proudly displayed in over twenty public collections across the U.S. and in the U.K.  Harvey's work has even been taken in by the U.S. Department of State for it's 'Art in Embassies' program.

The bronze features roughly 11 newly born loggerhead turtles breaking free from their nest and racing to the sea down an elongated and curved sandy beach.  Andre imparts realism of sand in the bronze with tiny waving dunes and a granulated surface.  The masterpiece comes with its original crate.  This example is edition 16 of 60.  This purchase comes with a copy of his book 'Andre Harvey - Bronze Sculpture'.
